Halloween is quickly approaching. I love Halloween, but being a thrifty girl I hate spending a lot of money on costumes that will likely only be worn once. I tend to try and find costume inspiration from stuff already existing in my closet. I like to start with a few costume ideas and see what I already have that could work. I then end up only purchasing a few, inexpensive accessories to finish off the look.
I styled each costume below with a pair of my trusty, comfy ballet flats, Tieks. There's nothing worse than achy, tired feet from shoes that are killing you after wearing them all night at a fun Halloween Party or a long night of Trick or Treating from house to house with the kiddos. Do yourself a favor and plan to wear comfy shoes with your costume.

WITCH
A basic witch costume is so easy to pull off. To start with, look in your closet for your favorite, little black dress. Add in some fun tights (found these at Spirit Halloween store for under $10) and a witches hat (found this at Target for $3). Voila, you're done! You can always go one step further and throw in an old straw broom or think up any other fun accessories to take it up a notch. I just happened to have this little broom from my son's old Harry Potter costume. Witch costume cost me under $15. Styled with Lilac Tieks.
DIOS DE LOS MEURTOS
Dios De Los Meurtos is another fun idea. This costume might seem a little more tricky to pull off, but it's actually fairly easy. You can either start with a basic black dress or a fun floral print dress. I've had this dress for a while and have always thought it would make the perfect costume dress for Dios De Los Meurtos. You can purchase a premade flower headband from a costume shop (usually costs around $10-$20) or make one like I did. I purchased some fake flowers and a headband from the dollar tree (spent $4 on flowers and $1 on a headband). Then I hot-glued the flowers to the headband. I've also seen tons of Pinterest ideas on making flowers from tissue paper too.
For the face, I don't like wearing a lot of makeup so I skipped the traditional white face paint and decided to use an existing black eyeliner and smokey eyeshadow I had. I spent $6 on a teal, sparkle eye liner to add in some color and $2 on some adhesive gemstones at Target. I then looked for simple makeup ideas on Pinterest and settled on the resulted one below. I have also seen facial stickers at a costume store like Spirit for about $10 if you don't think you can pull off the makeup. Dios De Los Meurtos costume cost me under $15. Styled with Fuchsia Tieks.
SOCIAL BUTTERFLY
A Social Butterly is one of the easiest and cheapest costumes to make! Wear whatever you are comfortable in, a black shirt or any solid colors are preferable. Print out a few social media icons (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, etc.) and then tape them to your shirt. Finish off the look by picking up a pair of fairy wings from the Dollar Tree, Target, toy store or costume shop. I picked these wings up at my local Dollar Tree. If you have daughters that like to play dress up, you might even be lucky enough to already have some fairy wings on hand! Not counting the ink I used to print the social media icons, this Social Butterfly costume only cost me $1! Styled with Fuchsia Tieks.
MINNIE MOUSE
Minnie Mouse is another pretty easy costume to put together. As long as you use some combination of the iconic colors red, black, white, yellow and/or polkadots you can pull off several variations of this one. I have a couple dresses that would work for this costume, but settled on this polkadot one. Add in some Minnie Ears (got mine on Jane.com for only $5), draw on a cute, little black nose and you're all set! Minnie Mouse cost me $5. Styled with Ruby Red Tieks.
CATBURGLER
Another super easy costume to pull off is a cat burglar. Grab your favorite black pants or jeans and any black and white striped top. Add in a simple black mask (found this one at Spirit Halloween Store for $4) and a cat ears headband (found this one at Target for $1). Take it up a notch and add a money bag or even a cat tail for more fun. Cat Burgler costume cost me $5. Black cat not included, I just happened to have 2 black cats, Lol! Styled with Matte Black Tieks.
COMIC BOOK GIRL
This Comic Book Girl costume is probably the most difficult one to pull off because of the make up. If you nail the make up part, then the rest is easy! I searched Pinterest for make up ideas. It can look a little intimidating, but if you keep it simple, it's easier than it looks. Do your regular go out makeup, then draw some outlines on your face and lips in black, add dots in white or red all over your face, pencil in some dramatic eyebrows and add a little white highlights to your lips and a couple other areas of your face as well. It's good to practice a few times before Halloween too.
For clothes, a simple a-line dress is perfect for that 50s comic book look. I had one in my closet that was perfect. I also found this cute headband from Target for only a $1 and it made the perfect finishing touch! Comic Book Girl look cost $1. Styled with Tiek Blue Tieks.
I can think of a dozen more, but I'll save some ideas for next year! Happy Halloween and I hope you find some inspiration to see what costume ideas may already be lurking in your own closet.
